Nepalese mountain guide Hillary Dawa Sherpa, who had been missing on Mount Everest for six days and was already presumed dead, was found alive near Base Camp on Thursday morning and taken by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu.
Hillary Dawa Sherpa disappeared in the early morning hours of May 30 in the upper reaches of Mount Everest. The 8,849-meter-high mountain is one of the most dangerous and busiest peaks in the world. After British climber Chris Thrall announced the guide's death in a video message on Instagram on Wednesday, rescue teams launched a search.
On Thursday morning, staff from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) found Hillary Dawa Sherpa near Base Camp. The Nepalese team not only supports route setting on Everest but also takes care of waste removal. Pemba Sherpa, head of the tour operator 8K Expeditions, which coordinated the search and rescue efforts, described the discovery to the AFP news agency: "He was crawling down."
